Environmental Impacts of Bitcoin
Ever since BTC prices skyrocketed in 2021, the carbon footprint of the coin has raised substantially. Bitcoin relies on a Proof-Of-Work consensus mechanism which requires miners to solve highly complex mathematical operations with very powerful machines. This leads to a very large electricity bill as a lot of energy is needed to keep the miners running.
Bitcoins Carbon Footprint
In 2022, Bitcoin mining released approximately 86.3 megatonnes of CO2 released in the atmosphere according to Forex sugget's Global Impact of Crypto Trading. It would take the average family car 207,500,000,000 miles to make that amount of CO2 which is 8,332,998 times around the earth. This is quite high and if crypto released this amountn every yearclimaate change may see a big increaase.
Mining Centers and Energy Sources
The top three countries with the most mining centers were the US, China and Kazakhstan. Although a lot of mminers ue renewable energy, many miners still rely on fossil fuels affecting the overall climate impact.
China's Role
China has always been a hotspot for mining and coal-based mining sources were heavily utilized however, recent government crackdowns have lowered the overall energy output and made mining a bit more greener but has impacted the global mining landscape a lot with a big loss of mining power.
Alternative Consensus Mechanisms
Proof Of Work is not the only consensus mechanism as other mechanisms like proof of stake have contributed to lower energy outputs and "green" cryptocurrencies like Chia which uses a proof-of-space and time mechanism and ethereum 2.0 which is switching to proof of stake. Mining technology has also become more energy-efficient and also using more green energy sources.
Long Term Sustainability
With climate change becoming a bigger and bigger threat, governments may lower ar even outlaw crypto mining to become more greener or coins may swithc to other consensus mechanisms to become more greener. Technological developments are being made all the time so more greener energy sources are becoming cheaper and more widely accessible.
Conclusion
Crypto is always changing and so are CO2 levels. What are your views on this topic? Thank you for reading and have a great day.
